How to read a comparison

Same ingredient, different name

Most medications exist under several names: one brand name, one generic name, and a different brand again in another country. What matters is the active ingredient and its strength — two products with the same ingredient at the same strength are, for most purposes, the same medicine.

Strength is not a measure of quality

A 10 mg tablet is not "better" than a 5 mg one. Strength is matched to the person and the condition, and a higher one is not an upgrade. Only your prescriber can say which is right for you.

Dosage form changes more than convenience

The same ingredient as a tablet, a capsule or a liquid can be absorbed at different speeds. Modified-release forms in particular are not interchangeable with ordinary ones, even at an identical stated strength.

Approval route

NDA is an original brand-name approval. ANDA is a generic, which had to prove it delivers the ingredient to the bloodstream at a rate and extent statistically equivalent to the original. OTC monograph covers products sold without a prescription under standing FDA rules.

Controlled substances

A DEA schedule badge means the medication is federally controlled because of its potential for dependence or misuse. Schedule II is the most tightly restricted of those available by prescription. These carry extra rules on prescribing, refills and supply.
